Paul Nash ha combattuto nelle trincee della Prima guerra mondiale, dalla quale è uscito con i polmoni danneggiati a vita per un attacco di gas mostarda, e da un disturbo di stress post-traumatico che ne ha segnato lo spirito. Nel dopoguerra il lavoro dell'artista si sposta progressivamente verso l'esplorazione radicale dei confini tra sogno e realtà. Cercando di dare un senso alla carneficina e alla brutalità della guerra, la gente cercava la saggezza antica e Nash trovò nel periodo neolitico un'interessante alternativa. Ha iniziato a illustrare le pietre erette di Avebury, il più grande cerchio di pietre megalitiche del mondo, costruito nel terzo millennio a.C. Credeva che certi luoghi avessero un'importanza mistica, ei suoi paesaggi di Avebury sono la prova di quell'atmosfera misteriosa.

Paul Nash fought in the trenches of World War I, from which he emerged with his lungs damaged for life by a mustard gas attack and a post-traumatic stress disorder that marked his spirit. After the war, the artist's work progressively drifted towards the radical exploration of the borders between dream and reality. Trying to make sense of the carnage and brutality of the War, people looked for ancient wisdom, and Nash found in the Neolithic period an interesting alternative. He started to illustrate the standing stones of Avebury, the largest megalithic stone circle in the world, constructed in the Third Millennium BC. He believed that certain places have a mystical importance, and his landscapes of Avebury are the evidence of that mysterious healing atmosphere.
