The human face was for Jawlensky a medium for transcendence, a way to God. He would devote himself to this subject, almost religiously until his death, with an exclusiveness unprecedented in the history of modern painting. Meditation is the portrait of Emmy Galka Scheyer, another underrated woman of art history. Through Jawlensky she met Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and Wassily Kandinsky, known as The Blue Four. To promote their art she moved to United States and organized exhibitions. Galka achieved to expand the influence of European modernism in the United States, establishing as one of the most important art mediators in history.
